Donna managed the Stoneham Club for 42 years and the adult bingo fundraiser for 45 years. She now works with Alumni, grandparent groups and fundraising. Donna grew up in Stoneham and still resides here with her husband Moreno, also a longtime Club employee. They have two adult children Anthony & Diana, whom they are both very proud of.
When did you start working at BGC, and what attracted you to the organization?– I have been working at the Stoneham Club for the past 45 years. I am very lucky to have such a rewarding job!
What do you love most about your job at BGC?– Seeing the kids learning new skills and having fun each day! Communicating with the alumni on the great memories they had at the Club.
What is your favorite memory from your time working at the Boys and Girls clubs?- In the beginning years, Mondays was just girls day. The girls had so much fun competing against each other in all kinds of sports & activities.
What do you think is the biggest challenge that young girls face today?- bullying, self esteem and friendship.
Who was the biggest influence in your life growing up, and what did they teach you?– Mr. “O”(Patrick O’Donnell) who was the first Executive Director in 1972 at the club. Mr. “O” was a mentor to me. He was someone you could always go to for advice. I probably wouldn’t have been in the role I had at the Club starting in the 70’s as a woman if it wasn’t for him.
Who is a woman (famous or other) you admire and why? – My mom! My mom had 4 kids right in a row at age 22. My mom took care of 4 kids and worked until my dad came home from the Service. My mom was a strong, kind, caring woman!
If it wasn’t for mom I wouldn’t be who I am today!
What word(s) of advice would you give young girls who attend our clubs today? – Stand tall, always be kind and if you put your mind to it you can do anything!
